PHELIX experiments

PHELIX is supposed to be a Petawatt High Energy Laser for Heavy-Ion Experiment. It was mounted at GSI that located not far from Darmstadt, an industrial city in central Germany. The WDM-collaboration has proposed a set of recommended experiments at the future FAIR facility at GSI combining intense heavy ion beams with the kilojoule PHELIX laser facility. Here we consider a simple problem statement for experiment on PHELIX set-up. The idea is to cut-off the prepuls from the target using an evaporated foil. The main pulse comes to the target when the shielding foil transmission coefficient is already close to unity.
